Internet Safety Guidelines

Safety on the Internet has a lot of implications. It might refer to you being very discreet in revealing your identity or any vital information about yourself. Out here we will discuss Internet safety in the context of safety from malware invasion. There are specific guidelines that you’ve got to follow for ensuring protection against computer viruses:

  • While surfing the Internet you might come across a lot of sites that have attractive popups advertising products or promising some huge (unrealistic!) sum. If you conduct an online virus scan you will come to know that there are many sites that have virus-infected popups. Hence, it is not safe for you to click on these popups however attractive and useful they might look, if you are not convinced about their credentials.
  • Some popups design their front ends to look like any other dialog box from the operating system or the browser you are using. Be specifically careful of those alerts and always reject them.
  • You should be very careful while opening emails as well, especially the attachments as they might contain malicious code that gets saved onto your computer when you download the attachments. After getting downloaded the malware gets executed and destroys all the applications on your computer one by one. These viruses are so difficult to locate that even the best anti virus programs available with you cannot detect them.
  • Try to avoid downloading material as much as possible. Especially games, music files and video clips that have a great probability of being infected with malware of different kinds. You should be very cautious while downloading an anti virus because if you are not downloading from an authenticated site, the probability of these downloadable executable files being harmful code in disguise is very high. Even the free antivirus applications that promise to conduct reliable free anti virus scans should be downloaded from the official websites only and not from other sites.
  • It is not only that viruses are the only malware that you should be scared of. Spyware is another malware that you should be cautious about. The software spyware infects your computer and then invades its privacy. It communicates with remotely located computers in the network once you log on to the network. They access vital information from your machine and this can prove to be very harmful for your computer as well as you. They leak out important information like your name, contact details, bank account number, credit card number, etc.

They disable the software security feature of your computer. Spyware come piggy backing on software that you might download. They might silently enter your computer even with e-mail attachments. Hence you should be very careful while downloading them. There are some very good antivirus spyware that you can use for spyware removal.

A Trojan is another malware that can cause great destruction to your computer. Originally the Trojans were not intended to be harmful but nowadays they are invariably vulnerable. They are always disguised as benign software and they enter your system under such claims only to destroy the hardware and software of your computer. Worms are another kind of malware that you can use anti virus software to remove.
